TODAY THE CITY OF REDDING TURNS 139 YEARS OLD!

A sweet glimpse of the City of Redding’s beginnings! As the City of Redding celebrates its 139th birthday today, October 4th, this advertisement takes us back to 1887. Oswald Grüttner’s Bakery and Saloon (advertised as O. Grittner), at the corner of Market and Tehama streets, advertised “Nice Light Bread,” candy and confections, along with wines, liquors and cigars.

Published just four days after the city’s incorporation documents were officially filed, the advertisement offers a taste of business life in the newly incorporated City of Redding. Happy birthday, City of Redding! Celebrating 139 years and moving forward into the future.
