In April 1911, the unexpected death of Edward Langdon Bailey shocked the citizens of Redding and attracted attention throughout California. A respected banker, public official, church leader, and civic volunteer, Bailey had been a familiar figure in the community for more than twenty years. This video explores his life, his many contributions to early Redding, and the tragic circumstances surrounding his death beside his mother’s grave in Redding Cemetery. It also recounts the similar and largely forgotten death of Max Thormahlen, also known as Max Thornton, in another part of the cemetery three years earlier.
